Description
These traditional Basque Espadrilles have been made-to-order to a unique specification, referencing both the footwear of choice of Spanish Republican soldiers, and the French Navy in World War II.
Canvas uppers in a black or olive green cotton twill are hand sewn to a dyed black jute and rubber sole, and fitted with an optional black ankle lace.
Inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula have been donning rope soled slip-ons since time immemorial, but it was the interwar leisure class who introduced the Mediterranean footwear to the rest of the world, exporting them to back to well heeled resorts via Laurence Fellows illustrations on the pages of Esquire and Apparel Arts.
The perfect summer shoe; a chic simple alternative to both the sneaker and loafer for warmer climes. Equally at home in the company of beaten up P-13s, Gurkha shorts or even a shantung tuxedo for smart balmy event wear.
